Labor and Delivery and Postpartum care: Was induced a few days shy of 40 weeks, initially the nurses were kind and took care of me, I did feel like I had to ask for specifics, I wanted to know exactly what was happening, due to it being my first birthing experience. I gave the nurse my birth plan. It wasn't over the top, it was pretty standard requests. I signed forms to take my placenta home as well. I asked for them not not wash off the vernix, and not to bath baby for at least 24 hours. I asked for an epidural around being dilated to a 5 or 6. Upon my OB breaking my water, I felt immense pain. My nurses did not tell me this would happen. Surprise! I'm not a dummy, I know labor hurts, but I would've liked some information about what I can do to ease the pain, I took the labor class, breathing was not working. I was at a 4 when they broke my water. I went to 8.5 dilation waiting for the epidural. I remember signing a paper that explained different pain management. I asked, then repeatedly begged for a pain shot since the anesthesiologist was helping someone else. I was being understanding waiting for the bag of whatever to go into my veins, then I waited while he was tending to another patient. The nurse refused to give me a pain shot. I was sweating so much, and I asked for a fan, they did not give me any relief. My sister is a labor and delivery nurse at a different hospital, she came in the door as I was struggling through back to back contractions then 2 minute break and back to contractions. She gripped my hips, told my husband how to help me get through the pain. Why didn't my nurses do that?! I finally got the epidural after begging for pain shots, being denied, and waiting WAY too long, and then it was time to start pushing. My sister asked what can they do to help stretch the area so there wouldn't be bad tearing, so she got cloths to do warm compresses. There was NO hot water in the sink. Why is there no hot water or slightly hotter than luke warm water? I worked hard, and 2.5 hours later the ob came in and 3 pushes later I gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby boy. Long story, but the night nursery nurse asked that I let her know before breastfeeding baby, for a blood sugar test. Baby would cry, I wanted to feed, I had to repeatedly call asking for her to come by quick so I could feed my crying baby. Nearly an hour passed waiting. I called one last time and said I am about to feed this baby, I can't wait, and then she came in finally. Just ridiculous. I did not know I had a 3rd degree tear until the next morning when the postpartum nurse told me. I knew I got a few stitches, but no nurse or doctor told me about it, and I couldn't feel it because of the epidural and laying down. There was one Postpartum nurse who was very educational, caring and was a huge help with all of the small questions I had. I left her a good review before departing. I forgot to get my placenta. I was so dead tired. No one contacted me about it, I am not even sure they did save it. They kept asking me about baby getting a bath. I said i wanted to wait at least 24 hours, they acted like that was weird and a few nurses said "So you don't want to bath him?" No, I want to bath him, but after 24 hours. Overall, there was a few good things about delivering here, but there are some major flaws. I just hope the nurses are more hands with their patients, they are more informative so that the to be mothers know what to expect. I especially hope they start giving pain management to patients who basically BEG for it, not waiting over an hour. I thought I was going to die, I was praying to God or anyone listening to help me. I think it was sadistic of them to not help me. Honestly, if I had to do it over again, I would not have delivered here. Please research the Austin area for Baby Friendly Hospitals and look for reviews in which the Labor nurses are really hands on. Thank you.
